The Geekery Book Review

THIS is how Alice in Wonderland should be retold!!

Here's an abridged version:

I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Only one time have I let a bad cover influence me to not buy a book, but many times an awesome cover has grabbed my attention and drawn me in. Call me shallow.

The cover and overall artwork of the whole Splintered series is phenomenal!! Even if this book had sucked, I would have kept it around.

So, aesthetically, the book is amazing. What about the story? Actually, I could sum the whole review up in three words.

MIND BOGGLING AWESOME!!

THIS is the way to retell Alice in Wonderland!! I love classic children’s stories retold with an edge. Anyone who plans to do that, please read Splintered and take notes. Splintered is Alice in Wonderland meets Tim Burton, with some teenage angst, but all told with the author’s unique creativity and imagination. I did not want to leave the pages of her version of Wonderland!!

I ranged the whole spectrum of emotion while reading this. From amusement and whimsy, to where page 331 solidly broke my heart, and page 335 stitched it back together. It was an eerie rollercoaster ride that I can’t wait to get back on with UNHINGED!!

DEFINITLY go buy this 5 star read!!

I'm still trying to find the words to explain my feelings about Owning Violet...

Does it make sense to love it just as much as I was frustrated by it?? I'm just going to divide this into two parts. What I loved and what frustrated me to no end (but the good kind of invested frustration!!)

What I loved:

Violet. I love everything about her. On the outside she seems meek, mild, and timid, but when she needs to, she can be quite fierce. She is sweet and kind, and people tend to take advantage of that, but she's also incredibly strong when she needs to be. I seriously love everything about her.

It's dual POVs. Nothing makes me happier that opening a book to find this!!

That moment when you understand the book's name. After seeing the dynamics of Violet and Ryder's story, no book has been more aptly named.

That there's more to come!! I can't wait for Rose's story!!

What caused me serious frustration (Again, the good kind of frustration!!):

RYDER MCKAY!!!!!! The one line in the book that sums him up completely is: "Why do I want him one minute and loathe him the next?". After reading his back story, you totally get why he is like he is, but DEAR GOD, a more frustrating man has never been written!! He is endearing and hot, but be prepared to pull your hair out. (Oh, and about 56% in he gets REALLY interesting!!)

Pilar. That is one woman whose character has been written so well that you seriously hate her. Like really hate. She definitely adds angst to the story. As much as I hate her, the story would not have had the same depth to it without her, so she's a necessary evil.

To sum this up, you definitely need to read Owning Violet. It's gripping, it's well written, it's yummy hot, and it needs to be high up on your to-read list!! You'll be happy to be owned by Ryder McKay!!

Hard as You Can - Laura Kaye Hard as It Gets - Laura Kaye Hard to Come By - Laura Kaye Hard to Hold On To: A Hard Ink Novella - Laura Kaye

My thoughts:

Since I read Hard As it Gets, I have been dying for Derek’s story. A book written about a hot, but physically flawed man had my full attention. Could it be written with the sexiness and heat that Laura Kaye is known for, but also come across as vulnerable and real?? Because seriously, most romances are written about hot, perfect looking specimens of male flesh that might have a cute, quirky character flaw, but ultimately they are something you would see sculpted in marble in the finest museums in the world. Now, the other books in the Hard Ink series have dealt with scars, both physical and mental, but I can’t remember ever reading a romance about a man that’s an amputee. Needless to say, this intrigued me.

Well, let me say one thing….

She pulled it off!!!! Completely, honestly, vulnerably, and most of all sexily. Derek is so, so sweet, and funny, and down to earth, and then on a flip of the coin he is smoking hot, domineering, with a dirty mouth that just makes you swoon. He is everything you would put on a checklist for the perfect man. And you know what?? His leg adds a complete other layer to him that makes him, in my book, the man of the year. I know I should focus on both characters, and Emilie is kickass awesome, but Derek totally stole the show for me.

If you have read the other Hard Ink books, it’s a guarantee that you’ll love Hard To Come By even more. The normal Hard Ink camaraderie between all the men is there, and to me, that’s one of the main reason I love this series. There’s one line in the book that’s my favorite, because it totally sums up this series. It’s:… “ She felt a little ridiculous as she walked into the upscale grocery store, a team of muscled badasses following her.”… And that is the hotness known as The Men of Hard Ink. They protect what they love, they fight for what they believe in, and they make us wish they were ours!!

This is yet another 5 star read from Laura Kaye!!

When a book starts out with a forward like this, watch out!!

Courtney Cole, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for not watering it down or sugar coating it!! You couldn't have written it any better than you did.

I've read Nocte twice in a week, and I still don't have the words to express how amazing this book is. It actually took me four days to finish it the first time, only because I didn't want it to end. You know that quote, "My test of a good novel is dreading to begin the last chapter."? Well, that was my problem. Courtney Cole is the queen of dark suspense, the master of unseen twists and turns, and I'm pretty sure she takes pleasure in ripping your heart out and then playing around with it. She knocked this one out of the ballpark!

I don't know how to review this without leaving a spoiler or two, so I'm going to play it safe and say, "GO READ THIS NOW!!". When I read The Minaldi Legacy, I was hooked on Courtney's writing. I love her other books, but to me, where she seriously shines is dark suspense. Her brain must be a fun place to be in for her to come up with plots like this. Nocte is DEFINITELY the best book I have read this year, and one of my top 5 all time favorites. Do yourself a favor and grab it now!! I can't wait for part two, Verum, to be released in February. (A note on that, Nocte has what's technically called a cliffhanger, but coming from someone who will usually just wait until the whole series is out to skip them, it is not a real cliffhanger. The important part is resolved, then it segways into the next book. So YAY for that!!)

A word to the wise: Toward the end, keep some tissues handy.

Surviving Broken is everything perfect, and fun, and wonderful. I am so in love with it, and I would give 10 stars if possible!!

Sadly, this is the first Beverly Preston book I have read, and after finishing it, I want to kick myself for taking so long to find her. The storyline is flawless, complicated, emotional, well, pretty near perfect. Before I knew it, hours had passed and I was completely wrapped up in JC and Reed's story. I cried. Seriously cried. But I also laughed, and sighed, and cheered them on all the way through the book. I can't wait to tear into the rest of this author's collection. There's a reason I'll be adding her to my go-to, drop everything and read authors list!!

I am horrible at discussing storylines without giving out spoilers, so I am just going to say don't add this to your TBR list. Go get it now. Like RIGHT now!! And read it right away. You'll thank yourself for doing so. I promise! This is one to keep and reread many times in the future.

When I started reading the forward, I was panicking a little. Just a little. But after finishing it, everything was good, and I calmed down. Here's a basic rundown for you: Due to contracts with her publisher, when the author publishes an independent release, it is restricted to no more than 65,000 words. She didn't want to be rushed and didn't want to sacrifice details so she broke the book into two parts. Part two will be releases in 2 weeks (THANK GOD!!) and will be available free of charge in whatever format you request. just sign up for her newsletter and you will get the file on 10-14-14. Honestly, I thought that this was pretty brilliant and awesome on the author's part.

As much as I'm not a huge fan of cliffhangers, I wanted the full experience of Sig and Tommi, so this was all good for me. But now that I've finished the first part, I am willing to do just about anything for the rest of their story!! It hurts to wait, but it will be SO worth it for the rest of their story. (ESPECIALLY if it hurts!!)

With each book that Michelle writes, I always think it's the best, that's no secret. And All Things Pretty (part 1) is no different. There's a reason this is one of my top go-to, drop everything to read authors. As I haven't read part 2 yet, and I don't want to spoil anything from part 1, I am just going to give you some of my favorite quotes from All Things Pretty while I sit and try to think of ways to get my hands on part 2 faster. ;-)

So, here you go. My favorite lines:

"I'm big, yeah, but there's not a single BOY part on me."

"...just knowing that I feel like she needs me, like she needs saving. And not just tonight. Every Night."

"I remind myself that nobody knows me. Not really. They might think they do, that they can judge me, but they can't. They have no idea what my life is like, what's involved and why I do the things that I do." ~~Just a note: Wow...This is something I try to remind myself of with everyone that I come across. Don't be so quick to judge!!

"So I'm worth it? Even if it hurts?" "Especially if it hurts." ~~~I LOVE that part!!

"See now, you keep saying sh*t like that and the gloves are comin' off. And so are the panties."

"You act like it'll be easy as pie for you to keep your hands off me. I'm thinking it's gonna be pure hell for both of us. I mean, have you met me? I'm pretty damn irresistible." ~~~Note: One of my favorite lines from the whole book. Sums Sig's adorable attitude up completely!!

And my other favorite line that quickly explains the kind of woman Sig sees in Tommi, but that she's trying to hide:

"I don't want a lady. I want a woman. One who knows her own mind. One who wears what she's comfortable in, one who says what she's thinking."

All in all, just in case you might have missed it, October 14th can't come soon enough!!

The only thing that I would change about this book would be to have more. More Lo, more Jett, and definitely more Kace!! In fact, I had to bug the author to find out what's in store for the rest of the Bourbon Series. I'll let you know what I find out, because I'm dying for more. There's got to be more!!

Jett...I love him, but there were a few times I hated him as much as I had previously loved him. He goes after what he wants, and gets it. No matter what. I'll admit that if this was happening in real life, some of Jett's tactics would have creeped me out. He's hot, but until you get to see his softer side and the reason he is the way he is, the things he'll do to get what he wants can seem a bit extreme. He takes alpha male to a whole new level. At one point I made a note of : "Holy shit!! No freaking way did he just do that!!", but amazingly, it's written well enough that by the next few paragraphs I am right back to loving him again. He is dark, but you get these little glimpses of light in him every so often. THOSE are the awesome moments. The ones you devour the book for.

Goldie/Lo is a hellion. Circumstances have her living a life she never dreamed she would, and Jett saves her from that. While he is trying to tame her, her spunkiness and mouth break down his walls, and causes him to have feelings he never thought he would. She also has the patience and the ability to forgive of a saint. There were more than a few times that if it had been me, I would have walked out and never looked back, but she sees something in him that has her sticking around. I'm dying to see more of what's going to happen to these two...and Kace....I want a book of just Kace. I freaking LOVE him!!

If this first book is any indication at all, this series is going to be amazing. Definitely one to look out for; the type you would drop everything you are doing to sit down and read. The premise is interesting, it has moments of funny (there's a "fishing" scene that has scarred my brain. Anytime I see a fish hook, my brain is going to flashback to that!!), and it's fan yourself, blush while reading kind of hot!! I'm already ready for more!!

Thomas's Choice (Scanguards Vampires, #8)Thomas's Choice by Tina Folsom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow...wow...wow....wow!!

I love this series. I got the first book free on Amazon, then that night I went and bought every other book that was out at the time. I just can't believe it took me this long to finally get the time to read this one. It's amazing!!

I don't know how to write anything without leaving major spoilers, so I am just going to say that the moral of the story is that love can conquer even the darkest part of the soul. ANDDD, when written right, M/M romance is HAWT!!! Well done Ms. Folsom, well done.

If you haven't started this series yet, or aren't sure about vampire novels in general, I was the same way. These were the first I read, and to this day there are only a handful of authors that I'll read paranormal books written by. The Scanguards Vampires series is not only my top choice in paranormal romance, it's one of my favorite series ever. I can't wait for Cain's story next!!

Dare to Resist (Wedding Dare, #0.5)Dare to Resist by Laura Kaye
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dare to Resist is quintessential Laura Kaye. A dreamy military man, a sexy, intelligent woman, throw in enough steam to power a locomotive, and you have a Laura Kaye novel. I can never get enough of them.

Two people thrown together after a missed chance in the past. She wants him to see her for who she is NOW, and he comes to realize he needs someone to see him too. Throw in her favorite, well worn erotica novel (I LOVE how that plays into their whole coming together!!), and he realizes it may be possible to have what he's dreamed of having with her for the last three years.

This is a quick, fun, HOT read that has built up my excitement for the rest of the series. The whole idea behind the series and the multiple authors is fascinating and I can't wait to read them all!

"DARE TO RESIST is the prequel novella to the sexy wedding event of the year! The Wedding Dare Series brings together five New York Times bestselling authors, one sizzling story of how the bride and groom fell in love, and four super sexy tales of bridesmaids who hope to get lucky in lust—or maybe even love—at their friend’s wedding. Here’s the story that starts it all!"

Sweet Filthy Boy (Wild Seasons, #1)Sweet Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sheer and utter brilliance!! Every chapter, paragraph, and word comes together to create pure magic. I can't wait for the rest of this series!!

I'm just going to list everything I LOVE about this, and try to do it short enough that it doesn't turn into a novel...

One of the most endearing, preciously innocent scenes that I have ever read was a conversation between Ansel and a flight attendant. It was something that you would pay to witness. Seriously.

I love the letter, and the idea behind it, that Mia wrote to herself. It shows how well she knows who she is deep down, and in predicting that response, she's actually giving them a chance. It's a brilliant idea.

There were some of their awkward scenes that were written so well that I was squirming and feeling intensely uncomfortable myself. In fact, at times it was so awkward that I couldn't figure out how the relationship could proceed from that point on. But being ingeniously written, it works out perfectly.

I love the friendship between Mia, Harlow, and Lola. Each one has something different to offer the group, and the three of them together is was friendship is all about.

I love Ansel's dimples. Picturing them each time makes him seem even more adorable and delicious. The combination of his filthy mouth with those sweet dimples makes him irresistible.

I love the humor mixed in with the seriousness. While it's lighthearted and fun, there are reflective moments in not only their relationship, but also in their personal actions, that make the two of them really decent people. People you would love to know.

A few of my favorite lines:

"...But if what she feels for me is even a fraction of what I feel for you, I want to be careful with her heart, because I can't imagine what I would do if you left me." (Seriously, how "Awww" inducing is that?? I love that he has a filthy mouth but a sweet, sweet heart.)

"I hate killing spiders, because I think they're amazing, but I'll do it for you if you're afraid of them." (This is one of my favorite lines ever. If a guy said this to me, I'd propose right then and there, and then make sure that line was in my wedding vows!!)

"Ansel was as scared to face his past as I was to face my future." (That one line sums up the entire story.)

This is such a lovely, fun story, but after reading it, I am going to be sorely disappointed if my trip to Vegas this year doesn't have the same results!! (Just kidding...but how awesome would it be if it did!?!?!)

There's Wild, Then There's You (The Wild Ones, #3)There's Wild, Then There's You by M. Leighton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There is no other author that can make me feel as indecisive and fickle as M. Leighton can. Every book, every time, I always finish saying that it's my favorite and the best she has ever written. But it's true. Her writing style is the same. The reason I buy her books without even reading the back is that I know there's always going to be a happy ever after, and her characters are always relatable. But with each book she writes, she reaches a new depth and complexity that keeps you coming back for more. You want to see what she's going to come up with next. This one is no different.

Violet is a fixer. She tries to fix everything and everyone, but she doesn't want to pin all her hopes and dreams on one person and give them the power to wreck her like her mother did her father. I love that she doesn't believe anyone is beyond help, and she is determined to help Jet, just from a distance. While Jet is handsome and charismatic, she sees that he is just a guy, that he is human like the rest of us. He's surrounded by alcohol, and his drugs of choice are women and music. He's not happy with who he is, and is trying to find a way to be a better person. Even he sees that Violet can help him. He didn't know what his type of girl was until he met Violet, but seeing that they met under false pretenses, they have to find a way to work through those lies to who they really are and what they really want. Everything about their story is gripping, and it has a hold of you through the entire book.

I stuck so many post-it notes in this book that I had to run to the store for more about half way through. They were so many remarkable parts that some pages got 2 - 3 notes each. It's witty and playful, and I love the banter between Violet and Jethro (that name makes him so human!! It could not have been better!!), they just seem to have this ease between them that is enviable.

Violet is my girl. If any character Michelle has written has ever been relatable, it's Violet. You want her as your best friend, sister, any way you could have her, you want a Violet in your life. There's not one thing I don't like about her. I love them both, but for me, she's the exceptional part of the story.

Some of the things I love:

Tia. Dear God, I don't think I could handle a friend like her, but she's a RIOT!! Some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is priceless!!

I love that Violet reads to escape. Just like the rest of us, reading is her drug.

I love her daddy. He's human and broken. Sometimes he can't see the hurt he's causing her, and even when he can, sometimes that's not even enough to get him through his pain. But he comes through for her and himself. That to me shows he's stronger than he realizes.

My favorite line from the whole book: "When I made love to you, I did it loving you with the heart that YOU changed." *sigh* So romantic...

If you have read this review, you don't need me to spell it out that I think this book is wonderful. You definitely need to meet Violet and Jet!!

Only one word can sum this book up: Astounding! Just don't wear mascara while reading it.

It's unbelievable how society let this girl down long before she was kidnapped, but through all the horrors she endured, she was always able to find her way through the darkness. The fact that she is looking forward to a future and not wallowing in self pity, says a lot about her character. More than anything, this is a testament to the power of hope. I wish her all the happiness and joy in the world. She deserves it!

The Night CircusThe Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nothing I say will ever come close to explaining the amazingness of this book. Ever. I'd heard about it, I even asked people about it, but nothing anyone said came close to expressing the pure brilliance of this story.

To be quite honest, up until the first 20% - 25% of it, I could live with it or without it. It was good, but it didn't hold up to all the hype. But about 25% through the pace picks up and your brain is just bombarded with the most intense imagery and imagination ever. It's books like this that are the reason I read. My imagination doesn't work like this, so to be able to catch a glimpse into the workings of other people's minds, to me, that's what reading is all about. I get to see things, through the author's words, that I could have never come up with on my own. All I can say is where has this story been all of our lives?? I want a circus like this in real life (Okay, I know that's impossible but just like I want a Hogwarts for real, I want a real Night Circus!!).

I had read a list that included The Night Circus as a romance for those who don't like typical romance novels, and honestly I didn't really understand how that could be. If I don't like romance, I'm not going to read any kind of romance. But I totally get it now. It contains one of the most beautiful romance stories I have ever read (especially the ending!!), but I would never classify it as a that. There's romance, but so much more. There's intrigue, danger, magic, friendship, beautiful imagery and detail. It all comes together and is written so well that it just explodes your senses. The sights, the sounds, everything is just so vividly described it seems so real.

Everyone needs to read this. It's not an easy read, by any means. Sometimes I get pretty lazy and if a book doesn't grab me within the first few paragraphs, I'll put it aside to "read later". Not that I always do, but I say I will. If I had put The Night Circus down, it would have been a huge disservice to myself. I cannot imagine missing out on this story. Definitely, DEFINITELY read this!!

Twisted by Emma Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'm calling in on life for the next few days. Is emotional whiplash considered a sickness?? I hope so because I need some personal days to deal with all these feelings.

I am so happy that I didn't read the synopsis before I started Twisted. I knew it was from Kate's POV, but that's it. Because of how funny and lighthearted Tangled was, I just assumed Twisted was too. I couldn't have been more wrong!! But, whatever you do, don't let the difference stop you from reading this. I am more in love with this series now than I was before, my heart just took a severe beating along the way.

We all know Kate and Drew from Tangled, or at least I hope you do. (I wouldn't recommend reading these out of order. At all.) Drew is his normal jumping to conclusions, kinda ass-y at times self. But I still love him. Flaws and all. This time though, we see that Kate isn't as strong as she came across before. We get to see that she's vulnerable, and at times, just as stubborn as Drew. I have never wanted to scream at two charters as much as I did these two. In fact, I had to put my Kindle on a time-out while I calmed down.

I'm not going to go into much of the story line, but only because I can't without spilling some major spoilers. I'm just going to sum it up by saying number one, don't read this in public. I was in Denny's for the first 40%, and made a scene by rocking back and forth saying, "No. No. No. Nooooooooo!!." And number two, just when you think things are going good, be prepared. Have a box of Kleenex. The author gives you some relief so you think everything is okay, only to steal that very same relief that you are cherishing and holding on to right out from under you. Then you accept that, and *BAM* she smacks you upside the head with another twist. The title Twisted is very apropos. Be prepared.

A few things I loved that I haven't already mentioned:

We get to see more Mackenzie!! I swear she is my favorite little detail of this series. The dynamic between her and Drew could not have been written any more perfect.

Their family dinners. They are priceless.

If I didn't already love the author for this series, the words Kate used to describe Drew when she was pissed would have won me over big time. "Herniated Intestine", "Orca Fingerer", and my absolute favorite..."Molester of Llamas". Whereas five minutes before I was ugly crying, after reading those, I was snot-laughing. These are priceless.

By the end, I actually liked Billy. Normally, once I dislike a character, that's it, I wont ever like them, but Billy gets my respect. Some of it came after it's revealed that as teenager he crazy-glued someone's Lhasa Apsos together, but most of it's his backstory.

To sum it all up, just go get this book. Now!!

Tangled by Emma Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'm just going to put this out there. This is one of the most brilliantly funny, witty books I have read in a long time. I love everything about it, so this review is just going to be a list. A list of love.

I love.... that it is written fully in the Drew's POV.

I love....that it engages the reader like you are right there in the room with him. (And there were MANY times that I wish I were!!)It's as if he's having a conversation with you. At times, a very funny and equally HOT conversation.

I love....that it starts out with him being the type of arrogant asshole that dads and brothers warn you about, but you end up totally loving him. He's still cocky, but you love him all the more for it.

I love....that Kate sees the real him, sees right through all his bluster and BS.

I love....that Kate is tough, real, honest, AND can kick his butt at Guitar Hero.

I love....the Thanksgiving dinner. Mackenzie adds a whole new level of funny to the story. I almost love her contribution to the storyline the most.

I love....how witty the one liners are, and there are plenty of them. I will never be able to hear, "Look mom- no hands.", again without totally losing it.

If you can't tell, I ADORE this book. I actually started it on audiobook and got so caught up in it that I stood in the middle of my living room, holding on to the vacuum cleaner for a full 20 mins before I realized what I was- or wasn't- doing. I went right out to buy the book. Took me going to three Targets, but I finally got my hands on it!! Do yourself a favor, and go get this book now. You will thank yourself by the first chapter!!
